New Year's Resolutions...
Do you make them? Not me. Not anymore. I’ve discovered, down the endless chain of years—Hah!—that the surest way to be certain I don’t achieve a given goal, is to make a New Years’ resolution out of it.
It’s really so very sad. Take the two top New Year's resolutions of all time…yes. You guessed ‘em! LOSE WEIGHT and EXERCISE! I’m telling you, don’t do it. Do not resolve, at the first of the year, to do either—or, heaven forbid,
both. It doesn’t work. Not for me. Not for a lot of other folks.
For instance: Every year on January 2nd, I go to my health club. I can hardly get in the dang door—and no. Not because I’m so fat.
Because it’s jam-packed with everyone and his brother, all of whom are out there, sweating and panting, determined to carry out their brand spanking new New
Year's resolutions.
It never lasts. By January 15th, they’re all back in their Barcaloungers again, like normal people, watching TV and munching away.
So I have a plan. Since you’re here and reading my newsletter, I’m sharing my plan with you.
I know you didn’t ask to hear my plan. Too bad.
This is it: Make your resolutions on, say, Flag Day or Groundhog Day. On Armed Forces Day or Boxing Day. Make them on February 3rd or November 12th. Make them on a day no one associates with resolutions. The way I see it, you’ll be more likely to carry through on such a day—a day without all the resolution
freight that New Years carries.
In fact, November is better is for resolutions than February, now I think about it. December is even better—given that it’s now January, I mean. The farther away the date for resolution-making is, the better. A year away. Two. Yeah. I’m thinking, say, April 1st, 2010. I’ll make a resolution then. Of course, that will be April Fool’s Day. Hmm. Maybe not such a good day for a resolution. I’ll have to ponder all this, consider my resolution-making choices. I’ll have to ponder for
years….
But for right now, The View is on. I’m grabbing the leftover holiday fudge and heading for my
Barcalounger…
Happy New Year everyone!
